Manchester City could be set to make a move for Chelsea defender Malo Gusto after reports claimed manager Enzo Maresca has urged the Premier League champions to pursue his former player during the summer transfer window.
According to the latest transfer rumours, Maresca is keen to be reunited with the French full-back after working with him during his time at Stamford Bridge.
The City boss is reportedly an admirer of Gusto’s technical ability, versatility and attacking qualities, believing the 23-year-old would be an ideal addition to his evolving squad.
The reports suggest Manchester City are assessing their options at right-back as they continue planning for the new campaign, with Gusto emerging as one of several names under consideration. While no formal offer is believed to have been submitted, the defender has reportedly been discussed internally as City weigh up potential reinforcements.
Gusto joined CHELSEA as one of Europe’s most highly rated young defenders and has gone on to establish himself as an important member of the first-team squad. Comfortable operating as a traditional right-back, wing-back or even in a more advanced role, the France international has earned praise for his pace, crossing ability and composure in possession.
Those attributes are understood to fit Maresca’s tactical philosophy, which places significant emphasis on full-backs contributing both defensively and during the build-up phase.
Having already worked under the Italian coach, Gusto would also be familiar with many of the positional demands associated with Maresca’s style of play.
Chelsea, however, are not believed to be actively seeking to sell the defender. The Blues continue to regard Gusto as an important part of their long-term plans, meaning any approach from Manchester City would likely require a substantial transfer fee before negotiations could begin.
The London club face another busy summer as they continue reshaping their squad, and several players have been linked with moves both into and out of Stamford Bridge. Gusto’s future has inevitably attracted attention given his performances and continued development in the Premier League.
