Curtis Jones is expected to stay at Liverpool this summer unless Inter Milan significantly increase their offer, and could then leave on a free in 2027.

Jones has so far been subject of two unsuccessful offers from Inter, the most recent being worth £21.7 million.

Liverpool have made their frustration at such low-ball bids known while maintaining their price tag of £35 million for a player into the final year of his deal.

While Inter may view Jones as a possible bargain signing given his contract situation at Anfield, the stance remains that Liverpool would rather keep him and allow him to leave on a free next summer than sell on the cheap.

That is according to the Mail‘s Lewis Steele, who reports that the club are “prepared to let him run down his contract” if no acceptable offer is made.

“No talks are active over a new deal but he is set to stay – unless a club stumps up that cash,” Steele adds.

The Telegraph‘s Dominic King has previously reported that Liverpool could still engage in talks over a new contract in the fullness of time.

But King writes that “that is something for later in the year,” with the club having “no concerns about the 25-year-old being distracted as his deal enters its last season.”

This development comes with Liverpool having already seen Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah leave for free this summer.

An £8.4 million deal was brokered with Real Madrid last summer to release Trent Alexander-Arnold from his contract a month early, having seen the right-back also run down his deal.

It is a pattern which has caused frustration for fans, not least around those players who are deemed worthy of a long-term role, and Jones is not the only player in his situation.

Nine others have contracts which expire in 2027 and it seems likely that Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo and Kostas Tsimikas could be among those to leave on free transfers.

Liverpool have fewer sellable assets this summer than they did a year ago when the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz were sold to finance a record-breaking spend.

But there is a need to weigh the short-term benefits of keeping a player of Jones’ ability – who could still be given new life under Andoni Iraola – up against the long-term concern of allowing him to leave for nothing.
