Excitement is mounting around Manchester United's summer transfer window following weeks of encouraging speculation surrounding Old Trafford. When it reaches its peak, there is good reason to believe a significant burst of transfer activity will follow under Michael Carrick.

This is separate from the anticipated signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who already looks set to complete a £39million move to the Theatre of Dreams. Beyond that, there are four alternative targets waiting in the wings, with reports suggesting all are unsettled at their current clubs, reports the Mirror.

This may not have been the case for these targets were United not in the running to secure their signatures. Here, we take a closer look at the four key transfers that could come to fruition in the weeks ahead, should United show the requisite ambition in the market.

Mateus Fernandes - $105.6M

Mateus Fernandes is arguably the most coveted of West Ham's discounted assets this summer. There is little question that the player possesses the quality to compete at Champions League level, and United are understood to be seeking a second midfielder to complement Ederson

The message following the Hammers' relegation seems clear enough: their star players are available at the right price. However, that is precisely where negotiations over Fernandes have hit a stumbling block, with reports suggesting United are unwilling to meet his £80m valuation.

The latest reports indicate United and Fernandes, who is also being monitored by Tottenham, have already reached agreement on personal terms. That's arguably the strongest indication yet that a player is willing to make the move, even before putting pen to paper.

Crysencio Summerville - $66M

Another West Ham player who looks set for a summer exit, Crysencio Summerville's circumstances are further complicated by his World Cup commitments. The Dutch international scored in both of the Netherlands' first two fixtures in North America and has consequently increased his market value.

As with Fernandes, it's seen purely as a matter of 'when' rather than 'if' Summerville departs the London Stadium this summer. Again, Spurs are believed to be amongst the suitors for the £50m-rated winger, whose valuation doubled after an outstanding first season for West Ham despite their drop to the Championship.

Lewis Hall - $105.6M

One potential signing United fans are hoping to see materialise as they search for a new long-term solution at left-back. Lewis Hall has the attributes to become the next Luke Shaw and The Sun has claimed he is keen on a move to Old Trafford after reportedly clashing with manager Eddie Howe.

Shaw, 30, is set to enter the final 12 months of his existing contract, with uncertainty surrounding whether he'll secure fresh terms given his ongoing fitness problems. Former Chelsea academy prospect Hall, 21, is said to be keen on Champions League action, which further strengthens the argument for a switch to United.

Tyrell Malacia struggled to establish himself at left-back before Patrick Dorgu was deployed in a more attacking wide position, where he has excelled. This means United find themselves once more seeking reinforcements in the left-back slot, although Hall would command a substantial fee of approximately $105.6 million.

Lucas Bergvall - $59.4M

One player who hasn't been quite as prominent in the summer transfer rumours is Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall. However, concerning United's pursuit of extra midfield options, the Sweden international has previous links with the club following two failed trials.

Bergvall, who is representing his country at World Cup 2026, had previously trained with United during his formative years at boyhood side Brommapojkarna. He also completed trial periods with Bayern Munich and Juventus around the same time, before ultimately signing for Tottenham in 2024.

Suggestions indicate the dynamic midfielder is considering his future at Spurs and might be willing to embrace a new challenge. And with a rumoured valuation of $59.4 million, five times what Spurs invested just two years ago, the north London outfit may be tempted to sell.
