Elite BlueCo director engaged in talks over Arsenal role

Arsenal have reportedly stepped up their search for a new academy manager after holding talks with Strasbourg technical director Pascal De Maesschalck over the vacant position.

The Gunners have been looking for a successor since Per Mertesacker departed the role at the end of the season, bringing an eight-year spell overseeing the club’s academy to a close.

While the recruitment process is still ongoing, De Maesschalck has emerged as one of the leading candidates to take charge of one of English football’s most productive youth systems.

The 52-year-old Belgian is currently technical director at Strasbourg, having joined the Ligue 1 side in 2024 as part of the BlueCo multi-club network.

Before moving to France, he built an impressive reputation for youth development across Belgium and Monaco.

De Maesschalck first joined Club Brugge’s academy leadership in 2007 before becoming academy manager four years later, remaining in the role until 2021.

He then spent three seasons leading Monaco’s academy before accepting the opportunity to become Strasbourg’s technical director.

His time at Monaco coincided with the emergence of several highly-rated youngsters who have since established themselves at senior level.

Among those to progress during his spell were Maghnes Akliouche, Eliesse Ben Seghir and Soungoutou Magassa, underlining his reputation for developing elite young talent.

Speaking about his philosophy while at Monaco, De Maesschalck stressed the importance of maintaining close contact with academy players throughout their development.

“Young players are part of our future,” he said.

“They always will be.”

“The feedback is daily.”

That approach would appear to align closely with Arsenal’s long-term commitment to promoting academy graduates into the first team.

The Hale End academy has become one of the club’s greatest strengths in recent years.

Bukayo Saka has developed into one of the Premier League’s best forwards, while Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman are among the latest graduates to make significant progress.

Marli Salmon has also emerged as another highly-rated prospect following Mertesacker’s departure.

The former Arsenal captain leaves behind a strong legacy after helping oversee the development of several players who have become first-team regulars under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have continued investing heavily behind the scenes this summer, strengthening their recruitment, medical and performance departments alongside efforts to bolster the playing squad.

Finding the right successor to Mertesacker is viewed as another important piece of that long-term strategy.

Although no appointment has been finalised, discussions with De Maesschalck demonstrate Arsenal’s determination to place one of Europe’s most experienced youth developers at the heart of Hale End’s next chapter.
