Arsenal will table a second proposal for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports in the Brazilian media.

The Gunners have had a £55m bid rejected by the Magpies for the Brazilian international, but Globo Esporte claims that the London club have “already signalled that they will make a new offer”.

Guimaraes has been a target for manager Mikel Arteta in past transfer windows, but he was not thought to be under consideration as an option heading into this summer.

The fact that the midfielder will be 29 later this year does raise question marks about his longevity, but he is clearly a player Arteta wants at the Emirates.

Guimaraes must be keen on the move

You don’t make a formal offer for any player unless you have been given encouragement from his agent or at least someone in his entourage.

Guimaraes has two years left on his contract at Newcastle, and with the player closing in on 30, he clearly feels that this is his last chance of securing a big move.

His club may have other ideas, though. The Magpies have already sold Anthony Gordon, and they could potentially offload Sandro Tonali too, so it seems unlikely that they would be willing to sanction Guimaraes’ departure as well.

Arsenal are talking with other midfielders

With there being doubts about the chances of signing Guimaraes, sporting director Andrea Berta is said to be working on other deals at the same time.

Tonali and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes are also names that have been considered, but those deals have been deemed too costly.

Moves for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott could, though, be stepped up if efforts to snap up Guimaraes prove to be fruitless.
