Today’s rumours round-up gets underway with a real scorcher - the Athletic report that Arsenal have made a bold move to sign Newcastle United’s star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with an offer close to £60m said to have been turned down by the Magpies. They’re believed to be unwilling to “entertain offers” for the Brazil star, as they simultaneously look to fend off interest in his midfield partner Sandro Tonali.
The report offers little else in terms of detail regarding Arsenal’s bid, or whether they’re intending on coming back in with a second offer. It’s also not clear whether the 28-year-old wants to leave St. James’ Park, either. Guimaraes is Newcastle’s captain, and joined the club from Ligue 1 side Lyon in a £35m back in January 2022.
The 3AM Verdict: Newcastle are in a really difficult position here. They’ve already lost Anthony Gordon, and saw their chosen replacement, Victor Munoz, decide to join Liverpool at the last minute. A transfer saga with Guimaraes similar to the circus that surrounded Alexander Isak last summer would be a nightmare for the Magpies, but they shouldn’t cave and sell the player for anything less than a significant fee either.
Man United chase World Cup wonderkid

Next up, Mexican wonderkid Gilberto Mora has been generating plenty of interest with his outings at the World Cup, featuring in two of the joint-host nations three games that saw them top their group with the maximum nine points. Scores of scouts are said to have taken in his performances, including ones from Manchester United.
Team Talk say that representatives from Manchester City and Chelsea were also in attendance for his exceptional showing in Mexico’s 3-0 win over Czechia, while Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool are also keen. Real Madrid are touted as his most likely destination, with Los Blancos said to be the 17-year-old Tijuana star’s “dream destination”.
The 3AM Verdict: Our suspicions are always aroused when this publication drop a ‘Mr McBal’ special. For those uninitiated, that’s an anagram derived from the first letter of the same seven clubs who they often link to a player in one sweeping article. That said, there’s no denying Mora is a top quality prospect who will be attracting interest, but this all feels a little speculative at the moment.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall looks like he could be on the move this summer, as Spurs look to radically overhaul their squad following last season’s dismal showing in the Premier League. Football Insider suggest that both Chelsea and Aston Villa were knocked back after making approaches in January, but could be set to make fresh approaches over the coming weeks.
The story says that Bergvall, who is thought to be valued at around £45m by his club, is eager to leave Spurs to pursue a fresh challenge. Villa and Chelsea are said to be in an “open race” to sign the Sweden international, with Nottingham Forest also believed to be in the mix as Anderson closes in on his mega-money move to Manchester City.
The 3AM Verdict: Tottenham look set to spend some serious money this summer, and you’d imagine they’ll need to make a sale or two too if they’re to keep their FFP status in the green. Bergvall would add some dynamism to all three of the linked clubs, and could be an intriguing Enzo Fernandez replacement should the Blues lose their vice-captain to Real Madrid.
