Pau Cubarsi hit by horror challenge during Spain’s win over Uruguay at World Cup 2026

Canobbio was shown a straight red card for an awful lunge on the defender that resulted in angry scenes as tempers flared at the end of the game. Fortunately for Barca, Cubarsi does seem to have avoided an injury.

Canobbio had earlier escaped a sanction for a really poor challenge on Pedri but was then handed his marching orders late on as Uruguay finished with 10.

The midfielder tried to defend himself after the game, saying: “I didn’t see the replay afterward, but it was clear I didn’t go in with a studs-up challenge; I felt his foot from the side. These are intense, dynamic matches.

“We need to be very self-critical and correct many things internally. The team needs to stay united and keep moving forward.”

The result means Uruguay are out of World Cup 2026, while Spain progress but now have injury concerns over Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino.
