Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, with French outlet L’Equipe claiming the Blues have agreed a deal worth £48 million for the highly-rated centre-back.
According to the report, the Frenchman is expected to complete his move to Stamford Bridge following the conclusion of the Club World Cup, where Chelsea are currently focused on their campaign before turning their attention back to the transfer market.
If completed, Lacroix would become the latest defensive addition to CHELSEA‘s squad as the club continues to reshape its back line ahead of the new Premier League season.
The France-born defender only joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg last summer and quickly established himself as one of Oliver Glasner’s most trusted performers.
His pace, aerial ability and comfort playing in a high defensive line made him a key figure as Palace enjoyed one of their strongest campaigns in recent years.
Chelsea have been linked with several central defenders throughout the summer, with the club believed to be keen on adding further competition and depth. Injuries and inconsistency have hampered the Blues’ defensive options in recent seasons, prompting the recruitment team to target players capable of fitting into an aggressive, possession-based system.
Lacroix has built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s quickest defenders and is regarded as being comfortable both defending one-on-one situations and progressing the ball from the back. Those attributes are thought to have made him an attractive option for Chelsea’s hierarchy.
While L’Equipe reports that an agreement has been reached, neither Chelsea nor Crystal Palace have publicly commented on the speculation. As is often the case during the transfer window, negotiations remain subject to final contracts, medical examinations and official approval before any move can be completed.
Should the transfer go through, Palace would lose one of their most influential defenders after just one season at Selhurst Park, while Chelsea would secure another player entering his prime years as they continue to strengthen their squad.
For now, the reported £48 million deal remains one of the biggest stories of the summer transfer window. CHELSEA supporters will be watching closely to see whether the French defender becomes the club’s next arrival once their Club World Cup commitments come to an end.
With the transfer market entering a crucial phase, further developments are expected in the coming days as Chelsea continue to pursue reinforcements ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
