Egypt have been dealt a huge injury concern with star player and captain Mohamed Salah set for a scan after being substituted against Iran. The Liverpool winger, who will officially leave Anfield as a free agent on July 1, was replaced by Mostafa Zico in the 57th minute of Saturday's 1-1 draw.
The four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner has impressed at this summer's World Cup, having scored his 68th international goal in a 3-1 win against New Zealand in Egypt's second group stage game. The 34-year-old has also assisted two other goals in the tournament to help his nation reach the knockout stages for the first time ever.
But there are now serious doubts over Salah's participation against Australia next Friday. The Egyptian FA provided a concerning update in a post on X after the Iran game.
They said: "Hossam Hassan, the technical director of Egypt's first national team, confirmed that Mohamed Salah, the team captain, complained of pain in his hamstring during the Iran match in the 2026 World Cup, which led to his withdrawal from the game in the second half.
"Hassan added that Ahmed Fotouh, Egypt's left-back, also felt pain in his hamstring, while Mohamed Abdelmonem suffered a bruise to his ankle.
"The technical director of our national team noted that Salah, Fotouh, and Abdelmonem are scheduled to undergo X-rays and medical examinations under the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Aboul Ela, the team doctor, to check on their conditions and determine the treatment program for the trio's recovery."
Uncertainty also surrounds Salah's club future as he prepares to leave Merseyside after nine years. The forward's agent Ramy Abbas has denied that the outgoing Liverpool star has already decided on his next side, amid speculation linking him with a move to Turkey.
Posting on X, he said: "Mohamed is doing perfectly fine and neither he nor I prefer to discuss sensitive future plans with people not involved in them.

"Both he and I are very private about these things. Yes, people may ask and they may get a standard polite response but that’s about it."
Abbas' comments come after Turkish businessman Torunogullari claimed the Egyptian superstar was keen on a move to Fenerbache.
Speaking to Fotospor earlier in June, he said: “He was very keen on coming to Turkey. The meetings we had were extremely positive. We had established common ground with him on many issues, including his salary.

“I believe that if the new management makes such a request, Salah will wear the Fenerbahce jersey. We would be happy to work with the new management on the negotiations.”
Salah will leave Liverpool as one of their greatest-ever players, having won numerous major honours since arriving at Anfield under then-manager Jurgen Klopp in June 2017. They include two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and two League Cups.
