Liverpool are claimed to have made an enquiry to the representatives of Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes earlier this summer.

Focus has been elsewhere so far in the transfer window, but investing in the midfield remains a priority for Liverpool.

Adam Wharton was readily linked, though that has gone quiet, while teenage prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi and Bournemouth‘s Alex Scott have since been linked.

Liverpool will have their eyes cast far and wide, and according to journalist Ben Jacobs, they went as far as making an enquiry to Guimaraes’ representatives.

In an interview with The Redmen TV, he reported: “There was an initial enquiry on the player side with Bruno Guimaraes.

“We know in the last 24/48 hours, Arsenal are the ones that have actually put a number over his head,” he added.

“Liverpool just did what Manchester United did months back rather than now, they spoke with the agent, and that was it. So I’m not aware that they’re progressing there either.”

It is certainly not uncommon for clubs to reach out to agents prior to approaching a club to gauge interest and plans, and Guimaraes won’t be the only player they put out feelers for.

It could, however, be seen as a nod to the club’s intentions when looking for a midfielder this summer, with the 28-year-old an experienced, combative, and versatile option.

According to the Athletic, Arsenal recently made a verbal offer to sign the Brazilian worth less than £60 million, which was unsurprisingly rejected by Newcastle.

The Magpies insist their captain is not for sale, though Liverpool supporters will know that line all too well after the prolonged ordeal for Alexander Isak last summer.

Why Liverpool would want Bruno Guimaraes

While Jacobs reports, to his knowledge, that Liverpool have not progressed with any talks over Guimaraes, it is clear why the Reds would be attracted to what he could offer.

At 28, he has the experience and leadership in midfield, which Liverpool could do with more of, and the physical presence that the squad is crying out for.

He could dovetail with the existing profiles deeper in midfield as a prolific ball-winner, but could also be used to progress the ball as a box-to-box player that can establish a connection with the forward line.

Guimaraes is almost two players in one, but he is 29 in November which is at odds with Liverpool’s typical transfer strategy.

As Jacobs told The Redmen TV of the club’s midfield plans, “It wouldn’t surprise me if they (Liverpool) want a younger kind of profile.”

This is why links to Scott (21), Bouaddi (18) and Wharton (22) feel more credible and realistic for Liverpool this summer.
