The latest Arsenal transfer news points to a surprise move for Curtis Jones, as the Gunners join Inter Milan in the race to sign the Liverpool midfielder this summer.
Arsenal eye surprise Curtis Jones transfer bid
Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Curtis Jones, with TEAMtalk reporting that Mikel Arteta’s side are genuine admirers of the midfielder and could make a formal move in the coming weeks. For Arsenal, signing a player of Jones’s profile would add much-needed depth and versatility to a midfield that will face the demands of a Premier League title defence and a Champions League campaign next season.
Curtis Jones’ stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Tackles Interceptions Duels Won%
Premier League 34 1 2 40 18 50%
FA Cup 4 2 1 6 3 63%
UCL 9 0 0 6 2 55%
He also filled in at right-back after injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, a role that underlined his versatility but also exposed his lack of a fixed starting spot in central midfield. The 25-year-old has made it clear he wants guaranteed minutes in his preferred position, and Liverpool are simply not in a position to offer him that.
Liverpool hold firm on £35m valuation despite contract situation
As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport on June 21, Jones has already agreed personal terms with Inter Milan and considers his Anfield career over. The Serie A side have made two formal bids, worth £18 million and £21 million respectively, and Liverpool have turned down both. The transfer has stalled purely on the fee, with the two clubs still well apart on their valuations.
As reported by BBC, Liverpool are holding out for £35 million despite Jones having just one year left on his deal, a valuation that will seriously test Inter Milan’s resolve. The gap between Inter’s last bid of £21 million and Liverpool’s asking price is £14 million, and that distance has given other clubs the room to get involved. Arsenal’s entry into the picture now adds a Premier League dimension to a move that looked destined for Italy just days ago.
Aston Villa could offer Jones the role he craves
The Gunners cannot offer Jones the one thing he is pushing for this summer, which is a guaranteed starting spot in central midfield. That is where Aston Villa enter the conversation, and former Villa full-back Alan Hutton believes the move makes strong sense. As reported by TEAMtalk, “Curtis Jones would complement the midfield at Aston Villa very well,” Hutton said. “Whenever he plays, you can see his quality. He always wants the ball and always brings something to the table. He wants to carry the ball from the back, play in tight areas and break the lines.”
Unai Emery’s system at Villa demands midfielders who press hard, move the ball quickly, and contribute in both directions. Jones fits that mould well. He is comfortable receiving under pressure, driving forward with purpose, and connecting play between the lines. Crucially, Villa can offer him a defined role in central midfield, something neither Arsenal nor Inter Milan can guarantee right now. For a player at 25 who needs to be playing regularly to reach his ceiling, Villa is the move that makes the most sense from a pure football standpoint.
