Scout tells Newcastle United to change transfer approach after Victor Munoz misstep

Newcastle United have experienced a slow start to the summer transfer window after missing out on Liverpool-bound winger Victor Munoz.

Newcastle United have been told they must change their approach in the summer transfer window - by a scout that worked for the Magpies during Sir Bobby Robson’s managerial reign at St James Park.

United are still reeling from missing out on a reported £35m deal for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz as Premier League rivals Liverpool stepped in to snap up the Spain international in a quickfire move. Newcastle are said to have turned their attention towards potential deals for Hoffenheim star Bazoumana Toure, Real Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli and Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo as they look to replace Anthony Gordon following his big money move to La Liga champions Barcelona.

Just over two weeks have passed since the transfer window officially opened for business and a £17.5m deal for France Under-21 goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen remains the only incoming business at St James Park. Former Magpies scout Paul Montgomery has insisted his old club must be more ‘aggressive’ if they are to secure more incomings ahead of the new Premier League season.

He told BBC Newcastle: “I’ve always thought you’ve got to be aggressive when you want to sign a player. If you target a player, you’ve got to be aggressive. What I mean by aggressive is you’ve got to show that you want that player.

“So if he’s based in Spain or France or London, you get there in his face and tell him the project that you’ve got at the club, tell them ‘we want you’ and ‘ you’re to be a main player for us’. You persuade him and get him excited at the fact of joining your club. Especially Newcastle United as they have a massive fan base, they’ve got a fantastic stadium, fantastic atmosphere. But as well as being aggressive, everybody has their own rule of thumb.”
