The reports of Arsenal making an offer for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes have thrown more shade on the Magpies' transfer plans this summer.
Guimaraes has become the heartbeat of Eddie Howe's Newcastle side in recent years with his forceful displays and infectious enthusiasm driving the team forward.
The Brazilian, who is now lighting up the World Cup and contributed two assists against Scotland, has long been admired by Arsenal with the Gunners having weighed up a bid for him before he joined Newcastle from Lyon four-and-a-half years ago.
They have now held talks with the player's representatives this summer and are reported to have made a £55million bid for the player, which was rejected by Newcastle who have told Arsenal - and any other suitors - that he's not for sale.
A second bid is expected to land at Newcastle's door but Howe is desperate to retain his skipper's services amid much noise around his squad. Guimaraes has two years left on his contract and Newcastle would like him to extend it.
Former United winger Chris Waddle says he wouldn't be surprised if the 28-year-old looked to leave Tyneside this summer, but says Newcastle should hold firm with him - and other wantaway stars - unless they get the right fee.
"It seems like they’ve been building a team, and all of a sudden, you have [Sandro] Tonali potentially leaving, Gordon gone, [Bruno] Guimaraes supposedly on his way out, and Lewis Hall.
"People often forget that Newcastle aren't under any obligation to sell. If a player wants to leave, that’s a different matter, but unless a player explicitly asks for a transfer, there's no reason for the club to sell.
"I think Bruno Guimaraes will hopefully have a good World Cup, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's looking to move on."
There is no suggestion that Guimaraes has asked for a move, and has often spoken about how happy he is at Newcastle and becoming a club 'idol'. United are determined to keep him and will look to continue talks over a contract extension.
