Liverpool transfer news: Tottenham face £60m-plus demand for Cody Gakpo
Liverpool transfer news: Tottenham Hotspur have been told that any serious pursuit of Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo will cost them upwards of £60 million. It is a massive price tag. Yet, it reflects far more than just a quiet domestic campaign in a red shirt. FSG are open to a deal, but absolutely on their own terms. If Spurs want him, they will have to pay a premium that guarantees Liverpool a substantial profit on the initial £35 million they handed over to PSV Eindhoven after the 2022 World Cup. The numbers make total sense from a boardroom perspective. Whether Johan Lange actually bites is another matter entirely.
Seven goals and five assists across 36 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season do not scream £60 million, superstar. Gakpo hit 87 shots, finding the target just 21 times. It is hardly the output of a forward setting the Premier League alight, and his average FotMob rating of 7.17 tells a similar story of a solid, yet uninspiring, presence in the frontline.
But the 27-year-old’s value stretches well beyond those Anfield data points.
Look at the World Cup. Gakpo just bagged a brilliant brace and took home the Man of the Match honours in the Netherlands’ 5–1 demolition of Sweden. That takes his tally to five goals across two World Cup tournaments. It is that specific international pedigree driving up his stock. Roberto De Zerbi wants him badly, with Tottenham already offering a five-year contract. They love his ability to play anywhere across the front three, and actual discussions have taken place between the clubs. This is not paper talk.
FSG will not block a departure if the money is right. Gakpo himself isn’t rocking the boat either, choosing to stay silent on his future while on international duty. Liverpool hold all the cards here anyway, given the player signed a long-term extension in August 2025 that keeps him under contract until June 2030.
Barcola lined up as Anfield replacement
If Gakpo goes, Liverpool already know who they want. Bradley Barcola is expected to leave PSG this summer after contract extension talks stalled in Paris. The French club are ready to cash in now that the 23-year-old is entering the final two years of his deal. Barcola has told PSG he wants out, though officials in Paris are publicly pretending he isn’t for sale until they find a replacement.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool have stayed in contact with the player’s camp throughout the window. The situation is completely open, but Arsenal are also sniffing around. Barcola managed 12 goals and seven assists in 45 games for PSG last term, even with his minutes restricted by an injury and the presence of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Losing Mohamed Salah was already a bitter pill for Liverpool fans to swallow. Letting Gakpo walk without a replacement lined up would be gross mismanagement, stripping away two of the club’s most experienced wide options in a single window. That is why the interest in Barcola feels like a calculated, aggressive pivot rather than a panic buy. Atletico Madrid and AC Milan have also asked about Gakpo, meaning Liverpool have plenty of leverage with multiple bidders at the table.
