Man Utd have been holding “talks” with the representatives of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, according to reports.

The Red Devils were prioritising a move for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, but The I Paper claim they are now pushing ahead with plans to sign an alternative.

Like Fernandes, though, Scott will likely cost around £80m, and it is still not clear if INEOS are willing to sanction an offer for a player that some would say is overpriced.

It is believed that the United recruitment team were hoping to have 2 midfielders in through the door by this point in the summer.

However, a reluctance to match the asking price for top targets means that, at this stage, Ederson is the only signing that has been rubberstamped.

Scott does have other suitors

Arsenal are known to be fans of the 22-year-old, and the Gunners have reportedly made contact with his agent, just like United.

However, the Premier League champions are currently focused on recruiting Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, so it seems unlikely that they will make a move for Scott as well, unless it becomes clear that they have no chance of recruiting their top midfield target.

Man Utd still have a lot of work to do in the transfer market

We are just a couple of weeks away from the start of pre-season, but Director of Football Jason Wilcox has not made as much progress on signings as he would have liked.

Heading into the summer, there was talk of three midfielders, a winger, a left-back and a reserve keeper being brought in, but a lot of that business was contingent on outgoings.

There are several senior players deemed surplus to requirements, including Marcus Rashford, Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and Joshua Zirkzee, but none have left Carrington yet. Onana looks set to join Trabzonspor on another loan deal, but the funds expected from departures simply haven’t materialised yet.
