Newcastle United transfers: Bruno Guimaraes has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this past week.
The midfielder has three assists in three matches so far this tournament, the joint most of any player. Guimaraes’ impressive displays come amid growing noise surrounding his future at Newcastle.
The 28-year-old has two years left on his current deal at Newcastle and has been subject to a transfer approach from Premier League champions Arsenal in recent days. Newcastle’s official stance is that they will not entertain offers for the Brazilian this summer.
But that stance could be tested should a significant offer come in, and the player push to leave Newcastle. Guimaraes hasn’t indicated any desire to leave Newcastle at this stage, though there has also been no talk of a new contract either.
As the transfer noise surrounding Guimaraes intensified this past week, Arsenal and Brazil defender Gabriel Magalhães posted a timely Instagram image of himself with Guimaraes, embracing one another during the 3-0 win over Scotland. It was accompanied by tagging Guimaraes with an applauding and heart emoji.
The Newcastle captain responded to the post by sharing it with the caption: “Big Gabi.”
Unfortunately for Newcastle, Gabriel and his Arsenal teammate, Gabriel Martinelli, could act as unofficial ‘agents’ working alongside Guimaraes in the Brazil squad at the World Cup. That Arsenal connection is sure to cause some discomfort for those of a Newcastle persuasion.
While Newcastle are firm in the stance that Guimaraes is not for sale, the player himself will ultimately have a big say on where his future lies.
