Ben Godfrey appears set for his fourth loan spell since leaving Everton - meaning the Blues will again miss out on a transfer boost.
The defender was sold to Atalanta in an £11m deal two years ago but has struggled to pin down a place in the side in Bergamo.
Instead he has spent the past two seasons almost exclusively on loan, with stints in England with Ipswich Town and Sheffield United and then, last season, with Brondby in Denmark.
Godfrey is now closing on another temporary move, this time to Scotland, with the 28-year-old looking set to join Rangers. Should the move be signed off he would link up with former Blues teammate Youssef Chermiti at Ibrox.
It would prevent a financial boost for Everton, however, who would again miss out on the opportunity to cash in on the sell-on clause inserted in the deal that took him to Italy.
The club has already benefitted from such a clause to the tune of millions of pounds this summer, with Everton pocketing 15% of the profit made by Newcastle United when they sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m - a figure of around £3.6m.
