Liverpool’s Premier League title defence last season ultimately failed to live up to the remarkable standards set during Arne Slot’s debut campaign at Anfield, bringing an abrupt end to the Dutchman’s time on Merseyside after just two seasons in charge.
Slot guided Liverpool to the league title in his first year following Jurgen Klopp’s emotional departure, but the Reds were unable to build on that success the following campaign.
Despite securing Champions League qualification, the club opted to make another change in the dugout, appointing Andoni Iraola as the man tasked with restoring Liverpool to the summit of English football.
Iraoala arrives at Anfield with an outstanding reputation after impressing in the Premier League with Bournemouth.
The Spaniard has earned widespread praise for his high-intensity, front-foot style of football and many believe he has the tactical qualities required for the role, although replacing a title-winning manager is no easy task.
Speaking about Liverpool’s decision to part ways with Arne Slot in a recent interview with ESPN, Jurgen Klopp admitted he could not explain why the club’s title defence unravelled, while backing Iraola to make a success of the opportunity.
“No idea [why]. I’m not close enough to judge that. I was super happy that they won the league in the year before and I have no idea what was wrong in the year after. Nobody was extremely happy with the season, that was obvious but they still qualified for the Champions League.”
“That is a success then so you can go again and have a new manager. Andoni Iraola is a great coach as well, like Arne Slot is, but it has to click it has to click together for a long tiem and for that you need luck.”
Klopp’s comments underline just how difficult sustained success can be in the Premier League.
Having experienced the relentless demands of competing at the highest level himself, the German knows all too well that fine margins often separate triumph from immense disappointment.
Many would’ve hoped Slot’s tenure would’ve lasted longer based off how it began but Liverpool will now hope that Iraola can quickly establish the foundations capable of bringing success back to Merseyside.
