Yan Diomande has reportedly chosen PSG over Liverpool this summer. While the attraction of the European champions is clear to see, the teenager could be making a big mistake in his career

Just when it looked like Liverpool was closing in on its man, Yan Diomande had other ideas.
The pursuit of the superstar teenager reached fever pitch over the last few days, with the Reds’ pursuit stepping up. Although a first offer of $115 million (€100M) wasn’t enough to sway RB Leipzig, Liverpool looked to be firmly in the driving seat.
Paris Saint-Germain even looked as though it was turning its attention elsewhere, clearing the way for the Reds to thrash out a deal for the 19-year-old, who has turned even more heads with his performances at the World Cup. Then came the bombshell moment.
According to The Athletic, if Diomande is to make a move this summer, then he wants it to be to PSG rather than Liverpool. That news coming through on Sunday will have felt like a gut punch for many Reds fans, such was the excitement surrounding the winger.
It perhaps shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise. Diomande has seemingly been angling for a move all summer, and while he has hinted at being keen on a move to Liverpool, he has flirted with PSG a little more recently.
"Paris Saint-Germain is a team I’ve loved since I was a child,” he said earlier this month. “My father supports Paris Saint-Germain, and it’s a team I admire as a football fan.
"It would be a pleasure for me to come and play at Paris with one of the biggest clubs... It’s always a pleasure to come here also because with French being spoken, I think adapting wouldn’t be difficult. But why not?”

Those comments would seem to indicate that his heart has always been set on a move to Paris, and with Luis Enrique’s side probably the best team in the world right now, any player would naturally have their head turned by the current European champions.
That doesn’t mean Diomande might not be making a mistake by choosing PSG, though.
At just 19 and with only one full season in one of Europe’s top five leagues under his belt, Diomande isn’t the finished article yet, and above all else, he needs games.
When PSG have got Bradley Barcola sitting in reserve, that certainly doesn’t suggest Diomande is assured of a starting spot. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, and Desire Doue have now led their side to back-to-back European crowns, and they aren’t going to be giving up their places without a serious fight.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
At Liverpool, Diomande would have almost certainly been guaranteed a starting spot in Andoni Iraola’s side. The Reds are looking for the heir to Mohamed Salah’s throne, and what an opportunity it could be for a player who has just set the Bundesliga alight in his first season.
If Diomande does go to PSG, he could be taking a huge risk in a career that is still in its infancy. He looks set to blast to new heights at the moment, and you don’t want to apply the brakes, which is what could happen if he has to battle for his position.

Who knows, maybe he will manage to displace one of that incredible front three and make a name for himself in the French capital. One thing is for certain, though, that looked more like a guarantee at Liverpool.
