Arsenal star now "expected" to start at World Cup after calf injury scare

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice is ‘expected’ to start for England during their World Cup round of 32 clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday, according to BBC Sport.

The 27-year-old has had a heavy workload for club and country over the past 12 months, and he was recently rested for the Three Lions’ 2-0 win over Panama after a minor injury scare.

Rice picked up a calf concern during the goalless draw against Ghana in the World Cup group stage. He returned to training for the final session before Panama, but was left on the bench.

BBC Sport now confirm that the Gunners star has fully recovered from a heavy blow to his calf, and manager Thomas Tuchel is optimistic about the midfielder’s availability on Wednesday.

Rice poised to partner Anderson in England’s midfield

Rice’s absence against Panama saw Jude Bellingham start in a deeper midfield position alongside Elliot Anderson. Morgan Rogers got the nod as the attacking midfielder.

Despite this, Bellingham made his mark in the World Cup game. The Real Madrid ace scored from a brilliant Bukayo Saka corner before delivering the assist for Harry Kane’s goal.

Towards the end, Jordan Henderson was introduced, with Bellingham being given a breather. Many had anticipated Kobbie Mainoo to play a part, but he was an unused substitute again.

Rice is now poised to accompany Anderson in the heart of England’s midfield against DR Congo. Bellingham should move higher up, replacing Rogers in the number 10 role.

The Three Lions have not been at their scintillating best upfront since the 4-2 win over Croatia, but they are still firm favourites to beat the Central African giants to make the last 16.
