Prolific striker sounds note of warning to Arsenal defender ahead of World Cup meeting

Viktor Gyokeres has admitted he is looking forward to facing Arsenal teammate William Saliba when Sweden take on France in the World Cup Round of 32.

The pair celebrated Arsenal’s Premier League title together only a few weeks ago, but will now be on opposite sides as Sweden attempt to upset one of the tournament favourites.

Saliba’s involvement remains uncertain after he missed France’s final group game against Norway because of a back problem, although Didier Deschamps is hopeful the defender will return for the knockout stages.

Gyokeres is hoping his teammate is fit enough to play.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him and playing against him,” the Arsenal striker said. “It’s going to be fun.”

The Sweden international also spoke warmly about the relationship they have built since becoming teammates in north London.

“He brings a lot of energy,” Gyokeres said. “He’s an extremely funny guy and someone you always want around the dressing room.”

Friendship will be put to one side once the match begins.

France have been among the standout teams at the tournament, winning all three group matches without conceding a goal and scoring 10 times to finish top of Group I.

Sweden, meanwhile, reached the Round of 32 as one of the competition’s best third-placed teams.

Graham Potter’s side opened their campaign with an impressive 5-1 victory over Tunisia before suffering a heavy defeat to the Netherlands.

A hard-earned 1-1 draw against Japan then proved enough to secure their place in the knockout rounds.

Gyokeres knows Sweden will need to produce their best performance of the tournament to eliminate France.

“We have to be at our best,” he said. “Our defensive organisation has to be almost perfect.”

The 28-year-old also stressed the importance of making the most of every opportunity in front of goal.

“We have to take the chances we get,” he added.

Despite France’s status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, Gyokeres insists Sweden believe they can cause an upset.

“We believe in ourselves,” he said. “This tournament has shown that underdogs can win games.”

For Arsenal supporters, the fixture carries added intrigue.

If Saliba is declared fit, two key members of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League-winning side will go head-to-head for a place in the Round of 16.

One Gunner will move a step closer to World Cup glory.

The other will see an encouraging tournament come to an end before returning to north London to begin preparations for Arsenal’s title defence.
