Crystal Palace are said to be interested in Harvey Elliott ahead of his planned involvement in Liverpool’s pre-season.
Elliott’s development took a hit last season as he was repeatedly left out of the Aston Villa team, due to the club not wanting to pay a £35 million fee that they would incur if he played 10 Premier League matches.
While he has dropped from the spotlight, it is worth remembering what a player Elliott promised to be.
Jurgen Klopp even said that if he were to regret “one thing a little bit it’s that Harvey didn’t play often enough.”

Now, Elliott is attracting attention from around the Premier League and beyond, with Palace the latest team to be linked.
Sky Sports‘ Lyall Thomas and Amar Mehta wrote: “Palace are also understood to be monitoring Harvey Elliott’s situation at Liverpool.”
This is in addition to the Eagles having an interest in Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare and Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell.
Elliott, who is still just 23 years old, has a contract that doesn’t expire until next summer.
Harvey Elliott’s fresh start under Andoni Iraola
While he wasn’t a nailed-on part of the starting XI for Klopp, the arrival of Arne Slot meant Elliott was relegated to a fringe player.
He didn’t start a single Premier League match before Liverpool had secured the title in 2024/25, and that was followed by a loan to Villa.
Very quickly, it became apparent that Unai Emery didn’t deem Elliott an important part of his squad, so Villa didn’t want to play him and be stuck with a £35m bill at the end of the campaign.
A shambles from the start, the player was left in the lurch and, as a result, played just 284 minutes all season.
Thankfully, the arrival of Andoni Iraola should give him a fresh start at Liverpool if he fits into the new coach’s thinking.
Elliott has been training on Merseyside to get ready for a pre-season in which he should be a key figure, with so many senior players away on international duty.
Already, speaking on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, the Mail‘s Lewis Steele has explained that the versatile midfielder is set to be given an opportunity on Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States.
This chimes with Iraola’s line in his opening interview for the club, when he said: “I will tell them, [they] are all new signings.
“For me, you are all new signings and I think we have a lot of quality in our squad, and [I’m] really looking forward to working with them.”
While Elliott should be provided with an opportunity to impress, it isn’t a guarantee that he will fit into Iraola’s plans.
He certainly doesn’t fit the profile of winger that the new coach wants, but he could provide good backup and competition for Florian Wirtz as an attacking midfielder.
He also has plenty of experience in pressing with intensity from his time working for Klopp.
There will be plenty of change this summer at Liverpool, but perhaps they could do with keeping a boyhood Red around.
