The England youth international made 17 appearances for the Lilywhites last year, scoring once. He was playing a key role for manager Paul Heckingbottom but returned to the Toffees at the start of January, after their midfield was hit with injuries.
Armstrong went back to Everton and featured in nine consecutive Premier League games - starting six of them. After that, the teenager got a further 33 minutes of football across three outings. He didn’t get on the pitch in seven games.
And now, journalist Alan Nixon reports that the 19-year-old is looking at a possible move to France or Germany, to further his development. Unsurprisingly, it is also suggested that a host of Championship clubs are interested in acquiring his services.
Everton boss David Moyes - who played for and managed PNE - admitted he would’ve liked Armstrong to stay at Preston, but was ultimately left with little choice. Needless to say, the Deepdale outfit missed the midfielder’s quality.
Speaking post-January transfer window, CEO Peter Ridsdale said: ““To be absolutely frank, even though people may think I'm a bit dour on this, I never believed he would come back. I didn't believe that because I thought his talents with us were outstanding and I've seen a lot of players over the last 39 years I've been in football.
“He's as good an 18-year-old, or 19 now, as I've seen in many a year. You then watch him play for Everton when he went back and you see how good he is settling back into their first team. So, I'd assumed that he wasn't coming back, albeit we would have taken him back had he been available.”
