Tottenham could face competition from Liverpool for highly-rated Bundesliga attacker.
Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive issues were well documented last season as the club narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League. Roberto De Zerbi, after guiding the Lilywhites to safety, had prioritised addressing the problems at the back. This has seen the club sign three defenders and a back-up goalkeeper.
Now, the Hotspur Way chiefs have been scouring the market for reinforcements in midfield and attack. De Zerbi will already be without the services of Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert for the start of the upcoming season as the duo are out with ACL ruptures. Now, Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange must look to bring in a new winger that would provide some depth going forward and compete for a spot in the first XI.
For now, Mathys Tel remains the only out-and-out left-winger in De Zerbi’s squad. However, using Tel week in, week out would be a risky move by Spurs, considering the player is still learning his trade. The North London club are aiming to compete hard on all domestic fronts next term, so signing a new winger is the right way to go.
Tottenham face competition from Premier League rival for the signing of FC Koln talent
It has been reported in recent months that Tottenham are among several clubs keeping tabs on FC Koln winger Said El Mala. He was a revelation in the Bundesliga last season, bagging 13 goals and five assists in 34 outings.
Recent reports suggest Spurs have been planning to launch an offer for the German talent. However, the player’s pursuit is not expected to be straightforward for the North Londoners following the entry of one of our Premier League rivals.
According to a report from Fussball Daten, Liverpool have entered the race for Said El Mala who plays a bit like Kingsley Coman. This comes after their marquee summer target, RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, is favouring a move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Should the Reds’ pursuit of Diomande hit a snag, El Mala is viewed as an alternative for the Ivory Coast international.
The rising FC Koln star vetoed a move to Brentford at the start of the month, which has paved the way for Europe’s top clubs to enter the race to sign the youngster. Thus, Liverpool’s interest in El Mala makes sense. The teenager proved to be decisive, tricky and unpredictable in his breakout Bundesliga campaign, demonstrating he has the potential to cut the mustard in the Premier League.
Spurs would hugely benefit from having a versatile attacker like El Mala, but their hopes to land him may have diminished following Liverpool’s entry into the mix. Hopefully, the Reds do not completely focus on signing the Germany Under-21 international, allowing Tottenham the time to land him after completing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes’ deals.
