Liverpool star Cody Gakpo to play for the Netherlands vs Morocco despite personal tragedy during FIFA World Cup 

Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo is reportedly ready to play the Netherlands's 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash with Morocco tonight (June 29) at the Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe despite his second son's death during pregnancy.

Gakpo, 27, and his partner Noa van der Bij had announced the impending arrival of their second son, Elijah, in May. However, in a heartbreaking turn of events, Noa - who's in the United States to cheer for her partner at the World Cup - announced on Saturday about suffering a miscarriage, posting on Instagram stories (as per Mirror):

"With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy. Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo Forever loved. Forever our son."

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, despite the shattering development, Gakpo - who shares a son, Samuel (born 2024), with his partner - has made himself available for the Oranje's knockout match against Morocco, posting on Instagram:

"Cody Gakpo has decided to play, making himself available today after terrible news over the weekend…Gakpo’s girlfriend Noa van der Bij had detailed how their son Elijah had passed during pregnancy, a sad moment for them.

"The emotional impact has been big, a terrible news for him together with Noa, Cody, the whole family, those close to them. Cody has decided to confirm his availability tonight for his country, his teammates… for Noa, and also for Elijah. 💭 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐲... you’ll never walk alone 🥺🧡."

Gakpo has played all three group games at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring a brace and registering an assist in the 5-1 win over Sweden.

Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo is making his second FIFA World Cup appearance at the ongoing 2026 edition in the United States, Mexico and Canada, having made his debut in Qatar four years ago.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a superb start to his career at the quadrennial event, scoring in all three group games as the Netherlands beat Senegal 2-1, drew 1-1 with Ecuador and beat hosts Qatar 2-0 to qualify for the knockouts.

However, Gakpo didn't score in the two knockout matches - a 3-1 victory over the USA and a shootout defeat to eventual champions Argentina in the quarter-finals, coming off with seven minutes left in the second game.

Overall, the Liverpool man has five goals and an assist in eight games at the FIFA World Cup, following his two strikes in this edition.
