Good option? Chelsea are monitoring€55M Ligue 1 striker

Chelsea transfer news: Chelsea target Monaco striker Folarin Balogun as summer transfer race heats up

Chelsea transfer news: Chelsea are looking at AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun. According to reports from Caught Offside, the 24-year-old American international has told the Ligue 1 club he wants out this summer. It is a massive development in the current transfer market. Balogun just finished the 2025-26 campaign as Monaco’s standout performer, scooping up the club MVP award from the fans after bagging 19 goals and three assists across all competitions. 13 of those goals came in the league, placing him fourth in the overall Ligue 1 scoring charts.

Monaco are playing hardball. They have slapped a hefty €50M–€55M price tag on their star man, and they have no intention of lowering it. The French club know they hold all the cards. With 30 appearances in Ligue 1 this term, clocking up 2,244 minutes, Balogun produced a goal involvement every 1.47 games. That is a lethal return. An incredible eight-game scoring streak in the spring of 2026 even drew comparisons with Kylian Mbappé’s recent run at Real Madrid.

Then came the World Cup. His stock skyrocketed after he scored twice on his tournament debut during a 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay on 12 June, picking up the Player of the Match award. The timing is terrible for any club hoping to snag a discount.

Massive competition from European giants

Chelsea are not the only team sitting at the negotiating table. Newcastle United, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and Barcelona are all tracking the forward. That is a serious list of heavy hitters. Dortmund desperately need a reliable number nine after another toothless season up front, while Juventus have lacked consistent goals for two years now. Barcelona want him too, though their messy financial situation makes finding €55M a bit of a nightmare.

The move makes perfect sense for Chelsea. Balogun grew up in London and spent his formative years in the Arsenal academy from the age of eight, so a return to the capital carries plenty of emotional weight. He is a nightmare for defenders. Naturally left-footed but lethal with his right, he possesses explosive pace to stretch lines but loves dropping deep to link the play. His stats reflect his efficiency, having logged 30 league appearances for 19 goals across all competitions, justifying why Monaco are holding firm for that €50M to €55M valuation.

There is a minor flaw in his game. A 61.9% penalty conversion rate is poor, having missed eight spot-kicks already in his short career. Still, his incredible output from open play easily overshadows his penalty struggles.

Monaco bought him from Arsenal back in August 2023 for a fee of around €30M, which could rise to €40M with add-ons. Selling him now for €55M nets them a tidy profit. It explains why the hierarchy in the Principality refuses to budge on their valuation. Chelsea have the cash, but they need to decide if they want to blink first.
