Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has emerged as a midfield target for Arsenal in this summer’s transfer window.
Arsenal were initially linked with Guimaraes’ team-mate Sandro Tonali, with manager Mikel Arteta reportedly keen on signing the Italian.
However, the total cost of securing the deal for Tonali is considered prohibitive for Arsenal, and they appear to have turned their attention towards Guimaraes.
Arsenal have yet to make a formal offer for the Newcastle captain, but they are optimistic a deal could be agreed for around £65 million, according to ChronicleLive.
The north London side believe any bid in the region of £65m is a fair price for the 28-year-old, who has two years left on his current deal.
Newcastle insist Guimaraes is not for sale, but it is believed that they would change their stance if they receive a ‘monstrous bid’ for the Brazilian.
The Magpies are reportedly operating within a modest transfer budget after failing to secure European qualification last season.
The potential sale of key players, such as Guimaraes, would provide funds to reinvest in their squad.
The Rio de Janeiro-born midfielder remains calm about his future, but he could be attracted by the prospect of moving to Arsenal.
Having won just one major trophy since moving to Europe, the possibility of joining a club like the Gunners, where he could win more trophies, could appeal to the Brazilian midfielder.
He would also have the chance of playing regularly in the Champions League, rubbing shoulders with the best players in Europe.
Guimaraes offers an impressive defensive work rate, progressive passing, ball carrying and leadership, making him one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
The midfielder, described ‘very special‘ by Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, would strengthen Mikel Arteta’s side and put them in a stronger position to compete on all fronts next season.
