Fisnik Asllani’s BVB move looks close despite Barcelona admiration

Dortmund have reportedly agreed a fee of €30 million with Hoffenheim for rising-star striker Fisnik Asllani, who helped the team from Sinsheim to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga.

A meteoric rise last season

Asllani has been something of a late developer when it comes to playing for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. Although he came through the club’s youth system, he struggled to really make his mark with the Sinsheim side.

In fact, before last season’s relatively successful campaign, Asllani spent two seasons out on loan, firstly at Austria Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga, then at SV Elversberg in the German second tier.

It was his spell with Elversberg that persuaded Hoffenheim to keep him in the first-team squad, as he fired home 19 goals in all competitions for the 2. Bundesliga outfit.

Last season, Asllani finally looked ready to perform at the highest level in the German game, scoring 10 goals and providing 7 assists. Before the 2025/26 campaign, he had failed to score in the Bundesliga, a run that lasted 10 games across two seasons.

A good attacking addition

Asllani could prove to be a very good attacking addition for BVB. Dortmund has lost the services of attacking midfielder Julian Brandt, who is leaving due to the expiration of his contract.

Although Asllani is a very different player from the former Germany international, he can play as a number ten as well as a central forward, which is a useful option for BVB head coach Niko Kovac to have in the new season.

Despite the move to BVB growing closer, the Kosovo international has never hidden his admiration for reigning Spanish champions, Barcelona. He has even stated in the past that the Blaugrana would be his dream club to represent. The forward reiterated his love of the Catalan giants on his recent social media.

While Asllani looks set to be plying his trade at the Signal Iduna in season 2026/27, one forward who looks set to leave is USA international Cole Campbell.

The 20-year-old winger spent last season at Asllani’s soon-to-be former club Hoffenheim with an option to make a permanent move. However, he struggled for first-team football at Sinsheim, making just five appearances and failing to score.

The Texas-born starlet joined BVB in 2022 from Icelandic club Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar, who he joined as a youngster trying to forge a career in the professional game.

Dortmund are open to allowing Campbell to leave in a permanent deal this summer, valuing the youngster at around £6m, although they are reportedly also willing to loan the winger out once more.

Ironically, another of Asllani’s former clubs, Elversberg, are interested in signing the youngster after winning promotion to the Bundesliga for the 2026/27 season, when they will be playing in the German top-flight for the first time in their history.

However, the German minnows are believed to have competition for Campbell’s signature from Scottish champions Celtic.
