Chelsea transfer news does not get bigger than this. Malo Gusto has reportedly agreed personal terms with Manchester City and wants out of Stamford Bridge.
Man City move closer to Malo Gusto deal
As reported by football.london, Gusto has agreed personal terms with City, who moved quickly to lock down his agreement. The 23-year-old is contracted at Stamford Bridge until 2030, but he is still open to leaving this summer. Chelsea transfer news around Gusto has grown louder over the past few weeks, and this update confirms the move is very much alive.
Gusto joined Chelsea from Olympique Lyonnais for around £30 million in January 2023 and has made 134 appearances across all competitions since then. As reported by FOTMOB, he scored three goals and registered 17 assists, and also lifted the Conference League trophy in 2024-25. Those numbers show exactly what type of player he is, a right-back who does not just defend but also helps his team attack in top-level football.
Malo Gusto’s stats this season, as per FOTMOB:
Competition Matches Tackles Interceptions Clean sheets Duels won %
Premier League 34 53 31 3 54%
UCL 7 13 14 1 62%
FA Cup 4 7 5 1 43%
Maresca factor and tactical fit at City
Maresca worked with Gusto at Chelsea for six months, and that time was clearly enough to build a strong bond. The Italian is set to be confirmed as Pep Guardiola’s successor at City, and has already made Gusto one of his top targets, going as far as describing him as one of his ‘main players’ at Stamford Bridge, as reported by BBC Sport. That kind of public backing from a manager carries real weight when a player is weighing up his next move.
Maresca needs a right-back who can press high, move into midfield channels, and hold his shape when City do not have the ball. Gusto does all of that naturally. He reads the game well, links play in tight areas, and knows exactly when to press and when to hold. The two also won the FIFA Club World Cup together in 2025, and that shared success gives City an edge that no other club can match right now.
Chelsea’s £75m valuation complicates transfer news
As reported by GOAL, Chelsea want £75 million for Malo Gusto, but City will not go beyond £45 million. That is a £30 million gap, and neither club is blinking yet. Gusto is only 23 years old and contracted until 2030, so Chelsea have no reason to sell him cheap to a Premier League rival.
Chelsea are not pushing Gusto out, but they will let him leave if a full-price bid arrives. City have already spent heavily this summer. Their £116 million move for Elliot Anderson broke the club record, and sporting director Hugo Viana has been clear that he will not overpay for secondary positions. That is a firm stance, but it could cost City dearly if Chelsea stay strong through July.
As reported by GOAL, Feyenoord right-back Givairo Read is now a fallback option for City, and the 20-year-old would cost far less than Gusto. The real pressure, though, sits with Chelsea. The Blues are close to signing Atalanta defender Marco Palestra for around £55 million as a direct replacement. Once that deal goes through, Chelsea have little reason to keep Gusto. The latest Chelsea transfer news points to a domino effect that could bring this saga to a close sooner than most expect. Once Palestra arrives, the Gusto saga stops being a negotiation and starts being a goodbye.
