Mohamed Salah suffered a hamstring injury during Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Iran, with team doctor Mohamed Abou confirming the forward had complained of pain before scans later revealed a strain.

A statement from the Egyptian Football Association said Salah has already begun a treatment programme, although no timeframe has been given for his recovery or whether he will be fit to face Australia in Dallas on July 3.

“I spoke with Salah and, God willing, the injury doesn’t seem serious,” Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said after the Iran match. “He assured me it would be fine, that it’s not a serious injury.”

A hamstring issue previously sidelined Mohamed Salah for three weeks from late April, though he recovered in time to feature in Liverpool’s final two matches of the season.

The 34-year-old has been in fine form at the World Cup, registering one goal and two assists as Egypt finished second in Group G to reach the knockout stage.

Salah did not train with his teammates as Egypt began preparations for their round of 32 clash with Australia in Dallas.

According to a statement from the Egyptian Football Association, he and teammates Mohamed Abdel-Moneim and Ahmed Fotouh instead completed rehabilitation work while the rest of the squad trained in Spokane, Washington.

The statement read: “Egypt’s national team holds training sessions in preparation for the Australia clash in the Round of 32 of the World Cup.

“Under the leadership of Hossam Hassan, Egypt’s senior national football team held its training sessions at Gonzaga University’s field in Spokane as part of the preparations for the match against the Australian national team on July 3rd in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.

“The training sessions saw the return of Hossam Abdel-Majid, and Hamdi Fathy participated in part of the session, while Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Abdel-Moneim, and Ahmed Fotouh underwent therapeutic training.

“The Egypt national team’s training session was attended by Hani Abu Rida, President of the Football Association Board and supervisor of the national team, Khaled El-Ghandourly, Vice President of the Football Association and head of the delegation, and Mostafa Abu Zahra, Mohamed Abu Hussein, and Tarek Abu El-Enein, members of the board.”

Mohamed Salah has scored 68 goals in 119 appearances for Egypt, underlining his importance to the national team as they prepare for a key World Cup knockout clash with Australia.

His availability could prove decisive against a disciplined Australia side as Egypt aim to progress further in the tournament.
