Everything you need to know about what happened on Monday and overnight from the World Cup...
Germany tumbled out of the World Cup in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in Boston. After a 1-1 stalemate through extra-time, the South Americans prevailed 4-3 from the spot with Jose Canale converting the decisive kick.
Julian Nagelsmann's side were left incensed after seeing a goal controversially chalked off during extra-time, as Jonathan Tah headed home powerfully at the far post. Yet following a VAR check, referee Jalal Jayed opted to disallow the effort after Waldemar Anton was deemed to have fouled Orlando Gill in the build-up.
In the wake of Germany's elimination and Tah's disallowed strike, former Liverpool boss took a subtle swipe at Arsenal. Klopp, now Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer, suggested Arsenal "scored 60% of their goals that way" during their Premier League title-winning campaign last season.
Germany's departure at the Round of 32 stage is expected to intensify scrutiny over Nagelsmann's position, although he confirmed after the match that he has no intention of resigning from his post.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Brazil advanced to the next phase after mounting a 2-1 comeback victory over Japan in Houston. Kaishu Sano had given the Samurai Blue the lead on the half-hour mark, but Brazil responded after the interval with Casemiro equalising before Gabriel Martinelli netted a stoppage-time winner.
Overnight, Morocco became the fourth nation to secure their place in the last 16 following a penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands. Cody Gakpo appeared to have clinched it for Ronald Koeman's side in the 72nd minute, before Issa Diop equalised for Morocco in the 91st minute. Despite Morocco fashioning opportunities to win during extra-time, they sealed progression on penalties, prevailing 3-2 in a nerve-shredding shootout in Mexico.
There was a poignant moment involving Gakpo after he found the net for the Netherlands - just days after the loss of his unborn son. After collapsing to the turf, his Dutch team-mates rushed to console him. Micky van de Ven planted a kiss on his head as Gakpo wept, before burying his face in his shirt, while Virgil van Dijk held him close. The ex-PSV forward pointed skywards in tribute to his unborn child as he made his way back to the centre circle.
Meanwhile, temperatures are forecast to soar in New York over the coming days, with the city's mayor issuing a warning about "extremely dangerous conditions". Zohran Mandani said the heat would climb above 37 degrees C from Wednesday through to at least Saturday, potentially hitting 42 degrees C on Friday. "Under the City's Heat Emergency Plan, the City has been planning since last week for what may be a historic heat wave," he posted on X. "Authorities will activate hundreds of free cooling locations across the city from Wednesday," he added.
