While several first-team players remain in World Cup action, Andoni Iraola will still have a squad bolstered by up to 19 senior players at the start of pre-season.

Liverpool will start their preparations for the 2026/27 season under their new head coach in the coming weeks, with a tour of the US on the agenda.

Iraola has voiced his enthusiasm for taking a closer look at the club’s youngsters during the early stages of pre-season due to his World Cup absentees.

However, he will still have a healthy senior contingent to get to know from the first day of training, with up to 19 players available if no departures are sanctioned.

Reports state players are expected to return around July 13, seven weeks after the conclusion of last season.

Who will report back first for Liverpool’s pre-season?

Position Players Reporting Back

Goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman, Armin Pecsi

Defenders Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet, Milos Kerkez, Kostas Tsimikas, Jeremie Frimpong, Calvin Ramsay

Midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Trey Nyoni, Stefan Bajcetic, James McConnell

Forwards Federico Chiesa, Rio Ngumoha, Jayden Danns

Every player not involved in this summer’s World Cup will be expected to report back first, unless they are granted extra time off due to any international exploits in early June.

This will not pertain to Freddie Woodman, Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremie Frimpong, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Trey Nyoni, Stefan Bajcetic, James McConnell, Calvin Ramsay, Jayden Danns and Federico Chiesa.

New signing Jeremy Jacquet can also be included on the list, having missed out on the possibility of representing France due to his season-ending shoulder injury.

The centre-back is anticipated to be ready for day one of pre-season, which will help create an early understanding with Leoni, if he is passed fit to be involved from day one.

Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, Milos Kerkez, Kostas Tsimikas and Dominik Szoboszlai were all involved with their nations in the summer, but will be among those to report back first.

Rio Ngumoha, meanwhile, was involved in England’s pre-tournament preparations up until mid-June and could be afforded extra time off if the club deem it necessary.

Unless injury prevents or sales of any of the abovementioned players are sanctioned before mid-July, they will all be expected to be among the first wave of players to start life under Iraola.

Liverpool have eight players who qualified for the round of 32, prolonging each of their stays in the tournament.

Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, Florian Wirtz, Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak will all be involved in the knockout stages.

This means, if they are given the customary three weeks off after their tournament concludes, the earliest they will report back is approximately July 25, when the club are on their US tour.

Any further advancement in the World Cup will push prospective return dates back.

If a Liverpool player makes it to the final on July 19, they will only return to training from August 10, less than a fortnight before the season starts.

When are Liverpool’s pre-season friendlies?

As it stands, Liverpool’s first friendly is their game against Sunderland in Nashville, which takes place on July 25.

Five days later, they face Wrexham in New York, before a trip to Chicago to play Leeds on August 2.

Once they return to Merseyside, they will play two matches at Anfield, against Monaco on August 9 and Como on August 16.
