Arsenal winger Noni Madueke was delighted for Gabriel Martinelli after he scored the winning goal for Brazil against Japan in the World Cup round of 32.
The Selecao progressed to the last 16 of the global tournament with a 2-1 victory over Japan. They had to work hard for the result against a resolute defence.
The game looked on course to head to extra-time before Martinelli grabbed the headlines. The Gunners winger scored in the 96th minute to break Japan hearts.
The 25-year-old came on as a second-half substitute for Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha, and he initially operated in an unfamiliar number eight position.
Martinelli moved into a second-striker role towards the end of stoppage time. Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes delivered a fine assist for the Arsenal star to score, in off the post.
At the same moment, Madueke was in a presser representing England.
When asked about his immediate reaction, he was undoubtedly pleased for his Gunners teammate and hoped the best for him, but not if Brazil face England later in the World Cup.
He said via Sky Sports: “Oh, top top top. For sure, I am happy for him. Yeah, I hope he continues to do extremely well, just not if they play us.”
Madueke, who was signed by Arsenal from Chelsea for £52 million last summer, started two of England’s three group stage matches at the ongoing World Cup.
The 24-year-old won the penalty for England’s opening goal against Croatia. Bukayo Saka replaced him in the XI against Panama. It could be the same when the Three Lions face DR Congo tomorrow.
Still, Madueke will be determined to make a mark if called up to replace Saka during the game.
Meanwhile, Martinelli made a vital contribution for the Selecao with the winning goal and showed that he can be more effective, operating as a second number eight or as a striker.
There has been much speculation about his future amid Arsenal’s pursuit of left-wingers. The Brazilian has a 12-month extension clause on his contract expiring next summer.
We believe the club should negotiate a fresh deal with the Ituano graduate, provided he is prepared to accept a reduced starting role behind the marquee left-winger signed.
