Jurgen Klopp went tonto after Germany were denied a winning goal against Paraguay – claiming if it shouldn't have stood, then Arsenal shouldn't have won the Premier League.

The Germans went out on penalties at a World Cup for the first time ever as South American side Paraguay came up with the shock of the tournament so far.

Julio Enciso had put Paraguay into a first half lead before Julian Nagelsmann's team flew out the traps in the second and equalised through Kai Havertz.

The expected onslaught followed and Germany thought they'd won it when Tah headed into the back of the net in stoppage time.

But huge drama ensued when referee Jalal Jayed was called over to the monitor to review a foul on keeper Orlando Gill.

He then deemed that Waldemar Anton had impeded the shotstopper, and from there the game went all the way to penalties.

Gill then became the hero in the shootout – saving two German spot-kicks before Jose Canale sealed them a famous win on sudden death.

The chalk-off became a huge talking point in the German media beyond and legendary Liverpool boss Klopp reckons he saw Arsenal get away with plenty of the same on their way to winning the Premier League last term.

Klopp told MagentaTV: "If the goal is illegal, then Arsenal won't be English champions. They've scored 60 per cent of their goals that way.

"Germany win the game when the ball goes in. So, of course, this is brutal."

He wasn't the only one unhappy.

Germany boss Nagelsmann, who was booked for his protests, labelled the decision a 'joke' while Alan Shearer told the BBC: "I don't agree with that decision at all. The keeper falls to the ground on a slight touch and it's very soft. I thought it was a terrible decision.

"You have to understand it is a contact sport, the goalkeeper has conned the referee and the VAR. The way he went down was pathetic."
