Bruno Guimaraes official contract clause that will cost Newcastle United millions - bad news…

Newcastle United transfers: Newcastle’s transfer resolve is set to be tested this summer regarding Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle United will face a battle to keep Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

Arsenal have made an approach for the Newcastle captain, who has two years left on his current contract at St James’ Park.

While the Magpies are adamant Guimaraes is not for sale, that stance will almost certainly be tested this transfer window, with Manchester United and Real Madrid also linked with the midfielder.

The 28-year-old joined Newcastle from Ligue 1 side Lyon in January 2022 when the club were sat in the Premier League relegation zone. He has since played a key role in helping the club initially stay up in the Premier League before twice qualifying for the Champions League, as well as ending a 70-year domestic trophy drought with the 2025 Carabao Cup win.

Bruno Guimaraes sell-on clause

Guimaraes joined Newcastle for an initial £35million which later rose to over £40million due to the club staying in the Premier League and going on to qualify for the Champions League. But the deal also included a significant 20% sell-on clause for Lyon should Newcastle ever sell the player.

That clause would entitle Lyon to 20% of any profit Newcastle make on the deal. For example, if Guimaraes was sold for £60million, Lyon would get around £4million.

If Newcastle were already adamant they will not be selling this summer, the sell-on clause only raises Guimaraes’ value to the club further. Which is bad news for the likes of Arsenal and any other interested parties.

NUFC punished for failing to agree Elliot Anderson sell-on

It’s standard practice for any club selling a high-potential player to insist on a sell-on clause in the event said player is sold for a significant profit. But Newcastle will miss out on millions for failing to insert such a clause into Elliot Anderson’s £35million move to Nottingham Forest in 2024.

The Magpies were facing a potential points deduction for breaching PSR and were not in a position to negotiate such clauses as they had the goal of extracting the maximum value they could from the player immediately in order to avoid punishment.

It just so happens that Anderson is on the verge of becoming the Premier League’s most expensive midfielder ever when he joins Manchester City for £116million. A 20% sell-on clause for Newcastle inserted into the Anderson deal would have entitled them to a further £16million. Instead, Forest will keep all of the profit.
