Arsenal winger vows to put friendship aside in search of glory

Noni Madueke has insisted his friendly rivalry with Bukayo Saka has only made both players stronger after admitting Arsenal’s Premier League triumph has given England’s squad an extra layer of confidence heading into the World Cup knockout rounds.

England booked their place in the Round of 32 after finishing top of Group L and now face Panama knowing the tournament is entering its decisive stage.

Madueke, who has featured prominently during England’s campaign, said playing in knockout football is exactly where every player wants to be.

“It’s a dream come true to play in the World Cup,” he said. “Knockout football is where it’s at.”

One of the biggest talking points from his press conference centred on his relationship with Arsenal teammate Saka, with the pair competing for places on the right wing for both club and country.

Rather than seeing it as a problem, Madueke believes the competition benefits everyone involved.

“We’re very close,” he said. “We want the best for each other because if he plays well and I play well, England and Arsenal have a better chance of winning.”

The Arsenal winger also highlighted the different qualities each player brings.

“I thrive in space,” Madueke explained. “Bukayo thrives in congestion.”

Saka returned from injury during England’s group-stage campaign and registered an assist against Croatia before making another lively substitute appearance against Ghana.

Madueke also admitted Arsenal’s league title has carried over into England’s camp.

“Winning the league was great,” he said. “That winning feeling lingers.”

He believes having several Premier League champions within the squad has strengthened England’s mentality.

“It gives you extra belief going into a tournament like this,” he added.

Madueke also praised Arsenal teammate Gabriel Martinelli, who has impressed for Brazil during the World Cup.

“I’m happy for him,” he said. “I hope he keeps doing well, just not if he plays against us.”

Madueke also confirmed England have been working extensively on penalties ahead of the knockout phase.

“We’re taking it extremely seriously,” he said.

The Arsenal winger acknowledged England will continue facing deep defensive blocks but insisted patience will be key.

“When teams defend with everyone behind the ball, it’s difficult,” he said. “Every top nation faces that.”

With Saka nearing full fitness and Madueke continuing to impress, Tuchel has two outstanding options on the right flank as England chase World Cup glory.

For Arsenal supporters, the encouraging news is that both players appear to be thriving together despite competing for the same shirt.
