Manchester City’s stance on Vitor Reis could soon face another test, with fresh interest emerging from Spain after the defender’s impressive loan spell at Girona.
The 20-year-old is due to return to the Etihad this summer after establishing himself as one of Girona’s standout performers in La Liga.
Recent reports from Brazil have insisted Manchester City will reintegrate him into the first-team squad despite Pep Guardiola’s departure, but his performances have attracted some attention in Spain.
Barcelona reportedly made an approach a few weeks ago. Now according toTribuna Deportiva, Valencia have identified Vitor Reis as one of their two preferred options to strengthen the right side of their central defence this summer.
Valencia keeping close eye
The Spanish outlet explains Valencia are searching for a right-footed centre-back who is comfortable playing out from the back.
Sporting director and coaching staff are said to be in agreement over two leading candidates: Vitor Reis and Real Madrid youngster Joan Martínez.
The report acknowledges Manchester City’s current position, stating the Premier League club are not considering letting the Brazilian leave at this stage. However, it adds that the situation could change as the transfer window develops.
Strong season has attracted attention
Interest from Valencia is hardly surprising given the defender’s campaign in Spain.
Vitor Reis became a pillar of Girona’s defence and finished the season as the Brazilian with the most minutes played in La Liga. He also impressed in some of the club’s biggest fixtures, including performances against both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The loan achieved exactly what Manchester City had hoped for. Regular football accelerated his development, while his displays also earned him his first senior Brazil call-up during the campaign.
But for now, Manchester City’s position appears clear. Looks like Enzo Maresca is ready to resist any approaches from elsewhere and count on Reis as a part of the first team squad from now on.
Valencia’s interest nevertheless underlines how much the Brazilian’s reputation has grown over the past year. Unless Manchester City’s stance changes later in the window, though, the Spanish side may find there is little room to negotiate.
