Chelsea are set to sell full-back Malo Gusto to generate funds despite being close to finalizing the deal of Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
Malo Gusto and his career at Chelsea
It was January 2023 when Malo Gusto made the move to Chelsea from Lyon. It was a deal that was worth approximately £30.75 million. His days at Lyon were extremely promising, making him one of the most exciting full-back prospects in the world back then. This consequently prompted the Blues to make the move and secure his signature. Gusto was not necessarily signed to be an immediate starter. That was evident as Chelsea immediately loaned him back to Lyon after signing him.
Gusto went back to Lyon and further developed his football. But he was provided with very minimal gametime. The French full-back then eventually returned to Stamford Bridge in July 2023. Those first 6 months in 2023 were quite eventful for Gusto, as his loyalties kept shifting between London and Lyon. However since July 2023, the 23-year-old has been a mainstay at Chelsea.
Malo Gusto’s Chelsea career stats, as per FOTMOB:
COMPETITION APPEARANCES GOALS ASSISTS
PREMIER LEAGUE 93 2 10
FA CUP 11 0 4
EFL CUP 10 0 1
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 7 1 1
Malo has played over 130 games for the Blues, scoring thrice and assisting 17 times. He has primarily occupied the right-back position but has also been deployed in the defensive midfield areas, covering central areas when in possession. His variety has especially been useful for Chelsea, because of their tendency to work with multiple managers. Gusto has notably won the UEFA Conference League (2024/25) and Club World Cup (2025) during his time at Chelsea.
Gusto set to be sold as Marco Palestra arrives at Chelsea
Fresh developments about Malo Gusto have revealed that Chelsea are actively looking to sell the full-back. This is primarily to bring in funds as the Blues close in on finalizing the signing of Atalanta defender Marco Palestra. Interestingly, Palestra is someone who likes to play at right-back. So it is believed that Gusto’s sale is an obvious decision after Palestra’s arrival. Chelsea have set the price-tag for the French defender at £75 million. It is understood that Manchester City are interested in him.
Furthermore, it is understandable why Chelsea want to get rid of Malo Gusto. He has been extremely disappointing ever since the departure of former manager Enzo Maresca. The defender was a constant starter and star performer under Maresca. It is also understandable why Man City of all clubs want to sign Gusto. This is because Enzo Maresca is all set to become the manager of the Manchester club. A reunion with Maresca might just rekindle Gusto’s footballing spark.
What does Gusto’s departure mean to Chelsea?
Well it is not a certainty that Gusto will leave Stamford Bridge in this window. However, it looks extremely likely especially after the arrival of Marco Palestra. And with Maresca and Man City keen on signing the 23-year-old, his departure just looks inevitable. However, him leaving wouldn’t affect the Blues too much.
Chelsea captain Reece James is well and truly back from the frequent injury troubles he suffered. However, it must be noted that Marc Cucurella has also departed to Real Madrid. So with two established full-backs leaving, new signing Marco Palestra has a big job on his hands. Chelsea really need to up their game and produce a way better Premier League finish after the miserable tenth place finish last season.
