Could David Raya Prove to Be a Spanish Secret Weapon?

David Raya has just enjoyed the best season of his career so far. Despite falling short in the Champions League, the Barcelona-born Arsenal goalkeeper was named the competition’s best, and he claimed his first-ever league title. The former Blackburn and Brentford man was an integral part of the Gunners’ return to the pinnacle of the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

However, with the World Cup underway, he still finds himself in a battle for La Roja’s blue jersey. Both Unai Simon and Joan Garcia have appeared in an identical number of fixtures for Spain as Raya in 2026, with each keeper appearing twice. Of the three, though, Simon is a clear favourite to start between the sticks, having done so in the Euro 2024 triumph and having claimed almost 60 caps already.

As the greatest show on Earth gathers pace, though, and stars like Lamine Yamal, Gavi, and Pedri take the plaudits, could the Arsenal keeper prove to be one of the most important weapons in the Spanish arsenal?

A Wealth of Attacking Talents for the Tournament Favourites

At the other end of the pitch, it is the youngsters who are catching the eyes of bookmakers and fans alike. Yamal is coming off his own personal-best season, in which he contributed 16 goals to help Barcelona go back-to-back in La Liga. For that reason, he has been the talk of the metaphorical town.

Elsewhere, despite a fairly disastrous season for his club in Bilbao, Niko Williams continued his development into a consistent attacking threat from the wing. Those two alone are a big part of why World Cup 2026 odds have The Red Ones pegged around the 9/2 mark. To have two potent young wingers is a good omen for tournament success, as was shown in 2024.

Even Ferran Torres, someone who feels as if he has been part of the national team set-up for a decade now, is still only 26 and is playing some of his best football. He matched Yamal’s goal haul for Barca and showed that he could well be the attacking figurehead for club and country, finally finding regular goalscoring form that he has displayed for his nation domestically.

With So Much Firepower, is the Goalkeeper that Important?

Spain will undoubtedly be one of the nations with the most impressive collections of attacking and midfield options at the tournament. Because of that, for many, the defence is a secondary concern. If those in the attacking third can produce the goods, it is unlikely that many will be able to lay a glove on them.

But this is tournament football. As we have so often seen, the most attractive brand of football isn’t always an easy winner. That was evident when the English were Spain’s opponents two years ago. No one would say that they were an entertaining side, despite the obvious talent in the squad. Instead, it was their miserly nature that got them to the final – and within a whisker of providing a scare.

Being at the heart of a miserly defence is something that David Raya knows very well, too. The Golden Glove winner was in goal for 37 of his club’s 38 Premier League fixtures, and he would concede only 26 goals as Arsenal claimed their first title in more than 20 years. In the Champions League, he conceded just five in 14 appearances. The Gunners’ success, despite their attack, was built on Raya.

A Commanding Presence and an Elite Keeper for a New Era

Arguably, Spain have not had a truly world-class keeper since David De Gea, and some would even go further back to Iker Casillas. David Raya appears to be that man, though. His ability to pull off the seemingly impossible in games where he has had little to do otherwise makes him invaluable to his club and his nation.

Goalkeepers are about their presence and ability to deliver in moments, and the Arsenal man appears to tick those boxes confidently. Should Spain find themselves needing to come out on top in a penalty shootout, too, there are few better in the world to have between the sticks.

While he may not be a guaranteed starter, and he certainly is not the most exciting prospect in the squad, David Raya could just be Spain’s hero if they want to go all the way and reclaim the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
