Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has liked an Instagram post by journalist Fabrizio Romano that mentions Arsenal’s interest in the player.

It must be emphasised that Romano was mostly praising the Brazilian for his performances at the World Cup.

However, it is yet another twist in a transfer that could be on the cards before the window shuts at the end of August:

Our colleagues at the Shields Gazette claim that Guimaraes is open to leaving St James’ Park, and this latest development does add fuel to the fire that he is pushing to join the Gunners.

A lot still hinges on whether Newcastle are willing to soften their stance. They have yet to give any indication that they are prepared to sell their captain.

Why do Arsenal want the midfielder?

This is not the first time that the Gunners have been linked with Guimaraes. In fact, the club’s interest goes all the way back to his time at Atletico Paranaense 7 years ago.

Manager Mikel Arteta had just been appointed manager at the time, and the Spaniard has clearly been tracking Guimaraes’ career ever since.

Guimaraes is one of 5 midfield targets

With there being no guarantee that Newcastle will sanction the Brazilian international’s move to the Emirates, it is not surprising that Arsenal have put contingency plans in place.

They reportedly like Guimaraes’ teammate Sandro Tonali, but he is deemed too expensive. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi are also on the club’s radar.

However, it seems the main alternative to Guimaraes is Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, with a formal enquiry now having been made for the 22-year-old. You can read our comparison to Declan Rice here.
