Chelsea’s long wait for Geovany Quenda is finally over.
More than a year after agreeing a deal worth around £43.5m (€50.7m) with Sporting, the 19-year-old has now arrived in England. He is ready to begin the next chapter of his career.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Quenda travelled to London on Saturday. Now, he is fully focused on making a strong first impression when Chelsea begin pre-season on Tuesday.
It marks the end of a carefully planned transition that has been unfolding for more than 12 months.
A year of preparation for Chelsea
His move to London is not entirely unfamiliar territory. During his injury recovery earlier this year, Geovany Quenda spent months working at Chelsea’s training ground. He worked alongside the club’s medical and performance staff.
The Blues extended his stay beyond the initial rehabilitation period. In that time, they used the opportunity to rebuild muscle mass and improve his physical condition. Also, they helped him settle into life in England through English lessons and time exploring the city.
By the time he returned to Sporting, Chelsea believed he was physically better prepared for the demands of the Premier League than when he first arrived in London.
That experience should make this week’s arrival feel considerably less daunting.

According to A Bola, Geovany Quenda’s objective is to be involved from the very beginning of Chelsea’s preparations under Xabi Alonso. He wants to make an immediate impression on the coaching staff.
After spending the past year waiting for this opportunity, he now has the chance to compete for a place in the squad. He will do so from the first day of pre-season.
Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias describes it as the beginning of Quenda’s “Premier League dream” after finally bringing his Sporting chapter to a close.
For Chelsea, the planning phase is over. The investment has been made, the recovery completed and the adaptation has already begun.
Now comes the part everyone has been waiting for: seeing whether one of Portugal’s brightest young talents can make the step up at Stamford Bridge.
