Newcastle United fined by UEFA after breaching financial rules as Chelsea & Aston Villa take…

Newcastle United have been fined by UEFA for breaching its financial rules.

Newcastle United have been fined around £5.2million by UEFA for breaching its Financial Sustainability Regulations.

UEFA rules, which the Magpies must adhere to having competed in the 2025/26 Champions League, limits clubs to spending no more than 70% of its revenue on squad costs such as transfer fees, wages and agent fees. This is different from the incoming Premier League Squad Cost Ratio rules, which limited clubs to spending 85% of its revenue without facing punishment.

Following investigation, Newcastle have been found in breach of UEFA rules and, as a result, have entered a three-year settlement agreement, which includes a €3m financial penalty, with a further €7m suspended pending future compliance.

United will also pay a further €3m for breaching UEFA's 70% Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) target in calendar year 2025, taking the total fines up to €6m, which roughly equates to £5.2m.

A club statement read: “Newcastle United has entered into a settlement agreement with UEFA following a breach of its Financial Sustainability Regulations in the three-year period ending June 2025.

“Following an overspend in relation to UEFA's Football Earnings threshold, the club has worked closely and constructively with the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) to swiftly resolve the matter.

“Accordingly, the club has accepted the three-year settlement, which includes a €3m financial penalty, with a further €7m suspended pending future compliance.

“In addition, UEFA has determined that the club will pay a further €3m due to breaching UEFA's 70% Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) target in calendar year 2025.

“Newcastle United thanks UEFA for its careful consideration and is committed to full ongoing compliance.”

Newcastle United’s fine is less than Chelsea and Aston Villa

The Gazette understands Newcastle see the outcome as somewhat positive after Chelsea (£27million) and Aston Villa (£9.5million) were hit with heavier fines.

In addition, Villa also had transfer restrictions placed upon them last summer. Those restrictions saw them sell Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for £41million.

UEFA are due to issue transparent details but in the meantime, sources close to the Magpies say they don’t have to sell players, though the punishment does underlin the need to trade well to create headroom and reinvest.
