Moises Caicedo has been named Ecuador’s new captain at the FIFA World Cup, taking over from Enner Valencia, who stepped down midway through the tournament.
A captaincy change born out of trust, not crisis
The handover was not caused by poor form or a dressing room dispute. As reported by The Sun, Valencia made the call himself after starting all three group games without scoring, choosing to step back and let a player in form take charge. Caicedo had already captained Ecuador once during the win over Germany, and he also led the side in a friendly against New Zealand back in November.
What stands out here is the timing. Giving the armband to a 24-year-old in the middle of a World Cup run is a bold move for any coaching staff, yet Sebastian Beccacece clearly trusts Caicedo’s calm style under pressure. The handover took place publicly ahead of the round of 32 clash, with both players standing together as the armband officially changed hands.
Caicedo’s stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Tackles Interceptions Duels Won%
Premier League 33 3 1 87 59 56%
FA Cup 4 0 0 6 6 64%
UCL 10 2 0 28 9 55%
A tough group stage run for Ecuador
Ecuador’s road to the knockout rounds was far from smooth. Sebastian Beccacece’s side picked up just one point from their opening two games, losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast before playing out a goalless draw with Curacao. Those results left them needing a positive outcome in their final group game just to stay in the FIFA World Cup.
Everything changed against Germany. As reported by ESPN, Ecuador earned a gritty 2-1 win to finish third in Group E, a result that called for discipline at the back and sharp moves going forward. In terms of stats, Ecuador had fewer chances than Germany during the match but scored theirs more cleanly, a pattern that has marked Beccacece’s game plan across the tournament. His team sits deep, soaks up pressure, and looks to hit teams on the break. That style suits a player like Caicedo, who can push forward from midfield once the ball is won.
Leadership experience of Moises Caicedo goes beyond Ecuador
Captaincy is not new territory for Moises Caicedo at club level either. As reported by football.london, he wore the armband twice for Chelsea in the Premier League last season, during losses to Manchester United and Manchester City in April. He also led the team out in the Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Cardiff City and the FA Cup third round win against Charlton Athletic.
That experience has likely shaped how Chelsea and Ecuador’s coaching staff see his temperament under pressure. This change in leadership could truly help Ecuador on the pitch, since Caicedo’s position allows him to set the midfield press early, rather than reacting once the ball has already moved.
Ecuador now face Mexico in the round of 32, with the match set to take place in Mexico City. A win would set up a last-16 tie against either England or DR Congo, adding extra weight to Caicedo’s first major event as full-time captain. Given how Ecuador have grown into this FIFA World Cup after a shaky start, their defensive setup and especially Caicedo’s calm style on the ball could make them one of the toughest sides left in this World Cup’s football landscape.
