Liverpool transfer news: Reds eye Cologne starlet as alternative attacking target
Liverpool transfer news: Anfield’s recruitment team are spinning plates again. With the summer window heating up, Liverpool have added a fresh name to their attacking shortlist: Said El Mala.
According to reports from ESPN’s Nicolo Schira, the 19-year-old Cologne winger is firmly on the radar. He is young, already proven in the Bundesliga, and carries a price tag that looks downright reasonable by today’s bloated market standards.
Liverpool aren’t the only one watching. Chelsea, Brentford, and Brighton have all sniffed around. When that many recruitment departments start showing interest in the same teenager, you take notice.
The lad’s numbers last season tell the story: 13 goals. Five assists. 34 Bundesliga appearances. He did not miss a single league game last term, a remarkable bit of durability for a teenager playing his first full campaign in Germany’s top flight after moving from Viktoria Köln.
Slicing inside and shifting targets
He fits what Andoni Iraola wants: pace, directness, and an absolute refusal to let defenders breathe. El Mala loves cutting inside from the left wing, thrives on the counter-attack, and possesses a devastating burst of acceleration. Crucially, he is versatile. He can operate through the middle as an auxiliary striker rather than just hugging the touchline.
Liverpool originally wanted Yan Diomande to future-proof their frontline. That ship, however, looks to have sailed. Paris Saint-Germain are leading that race with a massive €100million package on the table, while Real Madrid continue to lurk in the background. That astronomical fee has forced a rethink. El Mala represents a much more sensible financial alternative, even if Cologne are playing hardball.
The German club value their asset at roughly €50million (£43m) and have no immediate pressure to sell. His contract runs until 2030 and contains no release clause. Dealing with his representatives isn’t straightforward either; family involvement previously derailed a move to Brentford when his parents pushed back against the terms.
Anfield chiefs have already backed Iraola this summer with the addition of Victor Munoz, and Jeremy Jacquet should follow soon. But the wider picture remains complicated. Mohamed Salah’s departure will dictate the long-term decision the club make out wide.

Other options are on the table. Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh are both being monitored. Schira’s update confirms Liverpool are right in the thick of the conversation for El Mala, but Cologne maintain that a formal bid has yet to land on their desk.
