Arsenal are expected to intensify their interest in Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola this week after receiving encouragement that the France international could be available during the summer transfer window.
According to the BBC, Arsenal representatives watched the 23-year-old when France beat Sweden in the last 32 of the World Cup on Tuesday evening, highlighting just how seriously the Gunners are considering a move. They will have liked what they saw, with Barcola on the scoresheet.
Barcola has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time and appears to be one of the leading alternatives to Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers as Arsenal look to reinforce their options on the left side of attack this summer.
While Rogers remains a priority target, Aston Villa’s reported £130million valuation makes any deal extremely difficult. Barcola’s transfermarkt value of €70million would be much less than PSG would likely accept, but with them reportedly seeking at least £90million it looks a cheaper deal than Rogers.
With Villa under little pressure to sell and Rogers tied to a long-term contract until 2031, Arsenal may ultimately decide that pursuing Barcola represents better value.
The PSG winger would certainly not come cheaply, but his situation appears more attainable. His contract runs until 2028 and reports suggest PSG could be open to listening to offers, particularly with RB Leipzig youngster Yan Diomande closing in on a move to the European champions.
If that transfer is completed, it could reshape PSG’s attacking options and create an opportunity for Arsenal to make their move.
Barcola enjoyed an outstanding campaign as PSG lifted the Champions League, combining explosive pace, intelligent movement and improved end product. Comfortable on either flank but most effective from the left, he possesses the direct running and one-versus-one ability that Arsenal have occasionally lacked against deep defensive blocks.
For Mikel Arteta’s side, the profile makes plenty of sense.
Gabriel Martinelli has struggled to consistently recreate the form of previous seasons, while Leandro Trossard enters the final year of his contract. With Arsenal expected to refresh their options on the left wing this summer, Barcola would represent a significant upgrade with his best years still ahead of him.
Liverpool are also believed to be monitoring the French international, meaning Arsenal may need to move quickly if PSG indicate they are willing to negotiate.
Whether Barcola becomes the club’s marquee signing on the left or Arsenal continue to push for Rogers remains to be seen, but it is increasingly clear that strengthening the left wing is one of the club’s biggest priorities this summer.
