Liverpool transfer latest as academy talent set for£700,000 Bolton switch

Luca Stephenson’s eight-year association with Liverpool is set to come to an end after the club agreed a deal worth around £700,000 with Bolton Wanderers for the versatile defender.

Stephenson has been granted permission to undergo a medical with the Championship club, with the transfer expected to be completed this week following lengthy negotiations. The Reds are also understood to have negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the agreement, ensuring they retain an interest in the 22-year-old’s future development.

It represents the latest academy departure of the summer as Liverpool continue to reshape their squad while allowing young players the opportunity to establish themselves elsewhere.

Permanent move follows successful loan spells

Stephenson arrived at Liverpool from Sunderland’s academy in 2018 and steadily progressed through the youth ranks before gaining valuable senior experience out on loan.

A productive campaign with Barrow in League Two was followed by two impressive seasons at Dundee United, where his performances in the Scottish Premiership enhanced his reputation and attracted interest from a number of clubs.

With just one year remaining on his Liverpool contract, a permanent transfer increasingly became the most realistic outcome despite hopes that he could push for first-team involvement after impressing during pre-season under Andoni Iraola.

Instead, the next stage of his career now appears set to begin at Bolton.

Championship opportunity awaits

Bolton secured promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs and have moved quickly to strengthen Steven Schumacher’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

The former Everton midfielder has already welcomed Scottish attacker David Watson and former Liverpool defender Ben Davies this summer, with Stephenson now expected to become the latest addition.

Davies, of course, joined Liverpool in February 2021 as emergency defensive cover before spending time on loan at Sheffield United ahead of his permanent move to Rangers.

Stephenson will hope to establish himself as a regular Championship player after building significant senior experience over the past three seasons.

Liverpool youngster eager for permanent home

Speaking after his departure from Dundee United, Stephenson admitted he felt the time had come to settle at one club after spending three consecutive seasons away from Anfield on loan.

“I’ve done three years on loan and have developed a lot. So I think the next thing needs to be different.”

The Liverpool academy graduate also reflected on advice he received during his time in the club’s youth system.

“I always think back to one thing the academy manager always said at Liverpool: ‘Once you’ve hit 100 senior games, I’ll let you know that you’ve made it’.”

“I’ve now made more than 100 a big landmark for me and I want to keep playing.”

Stephenson reached that milestone thanks to 34 appearances for Barrow and a further 67 outings across two seasons with Dundee United.

Despite that experience, he was unable to force his way into a Liverpool first-team matchday squad.

Decision made after assessing Liverpool pathway

Before his future was resolved, Stephenson remained determined to impress during Liverpool’s preparations for the new season while acknowledging that regular football had become the priority.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said:

“If I’m around, I’ll be looking to get on that pre-season tour (at Liverpool), hopefully get some minutes and impress.”

He added: “I’m at the age now where I need to be playing first-team football, like I have done for the past couple of seasons.”

“If that’s at Liverpool, fantastic. If it’s not, I’ll find a new adventure, like the other boys who have left and done really well.”

That new adventure now appears set to come at Bolton, where Stephenson will have the opportunity to test himself in the Championship after establishing himself as one of Liverpool’s most consistent academy graduates in recent years.

Originally developed as a central midfielder, Stephenson has successfully reinvented himself as a right-back and wing-back, versatility that is expected to make him a valuable addition as Bolton prepare for life back in the second tier.

He will not be the first Liverpool youngster to use Bolton Wanderers as a stepping stone in his development.

Conor Bradley enjoyed an outstanding season on loan at the Toughsheet Community Stadium during the 2022/23 campaign, making more than 50 appearances, helping Bolton lift the EFL Trophy at Wembley and earning the club’s Player of the Year award. The experience proved transformative, with Bradley returning to Anfield ready to establish himself in Liverpool’s first-team squad.

Bolton also signed Owen Beck on loan from Liverpool midway through that same season after his spell in Portugal with Famalicão was cut short. Although Beck’s campaign was disrupted by injury, the move continued the strong relationship between the two clubs when it came to developing young Liverpool talent.

Stephenson’s move differs in that it will be a permanent transfer rather than a temporary loan, but Liverpool will hope he can enjoy similar success.

The inclusion of a sell-on clause also ensures the Reds will continue to benefit should the versatile defender fulfil his potential during the next stage of his career.
