Mohamed Salah could finally honour the wishes of a Premier League icon and seal a "selfish" move away from Liverpool when he officially becomes a free agent today. The Egyptian attacker leaves Anfield on 1 July following an agreement with the Reds to tear up his contract 12 months ahead of its scheduled expiry.
Salah's premature departure draws to a close a remarkable nine-year stint on Merseyside. The 34-year-old netted 257 goals across all competitions and played a pivotal role in the Liverpool squad that claimed the Premier League title twice and secured Champions League glory during one of the most triumphant eras in the club's modern history.
Yet his final season was marred by a public rift with manager Arne Slot, who was subsequently replaced at the conclusion of the campaign by ex-Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola. Focus has now shifted to Salah's next destination, with a lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League broadly regarded as the most probable outcome.
However, no deal has been confirmed as yet, with Salah presently representing Egypt at the FIFA World Cup in North America. That uncertainty keeps the possibility open for a stunning Premier League transfer – something that would thrill Chelsea icon Didier Drogba.
Back in 2021, Salah found himself embroiled in a protracted contract dispute with Liverpool before ultimately signing a new deal worth upwards of £350,000 per week, establishing him as the highest-paid player in the club's history. Prior to that extension being agreed, Drogba encouraged his former club to make a dramatic swoop to bring the winger back to Stamford Bridge.

Drogba told Al-Axis TV: "If I am selfish, I will tell Salah to leave Liverpool and return to Chelsea. My opinion is that Salah will remain the best, no matter if he continues at Liverpool or if he moves.
"Any other team would perform better [with him] because he understands what he is doing, is good at scoring and creating goals, and only needs the confidence of the coach. I do not know what his decision would be. This is his decision alone and his future, but wherever he goes, I will be one of his fans."

Salah initially joined Chelsea from Swiss outfit Basel in January 2014 in a transfer worth approximately £11million. However, his stint in west London never kicked into gear, with the 'Egyptian King' featuring in only 13 Premier League matches before loan switches to Fiorentina and Roma.

The Italian side acquired him on a permanent basis in 2016, setting the stage for his £34m transfer to Liverpool 12 months later.
