Alan Shearer says what every Newcastle United fan is thinking about Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal…

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer breaks his silence on the Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal links.

Guimaraes' representatives have held talks with Arsenal as the midfielder weighs up his future, although the Magpies insist their captain is not for sale.

The Brazilian joined from Lyon for £40milllion in January 2022 and has gone on to achieve legendary status on Tyneside after becoming the first Magpies skipper in 56 years to lift a trophy after winning the Carabao Cup last year.

In the past 12 months, United have sold Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon to Liverpool and Barcelona, respectively, while Sandro Tonali looks increasingly likely to leave, but Shearer has suggested that losing Guimaraes would be a step too far.

Because of that, Shearer is struggling to envisage a scenario in which Newcastle would sanction a sale.

Alan Shearer on Bruno Guimaraes speculation

“I think it would look be a really poor look for Newcastle to sell their best player,” Shearer told Betfair. “You can see what he's doing for Brazil in this World Cup. I think he's been one of their best players. He is a brilliant talent.

“And with Anthony Gordon going, I think it would be a really poor look if Newcastle were to sell Bruno. And it would not go down well with the fans.

“I don't see it happening. I'd be surprised if it were to happen. I hope it's just paper talk and there's no truth in that because it would be a big blow to Newcastle. There'd be a lot of angry fans if he were to go.

“I think it's even more so now because of social media and everyone has an opinion and everyone can say what they want. 99% of it is going to be trash, and I do hope it's trash about Bruno.”

There had been fears Newcastle could be forced to cash in on Guimaraes with only two years left on his contract, but the Gazette understands there is an option of a further year, effectively tying him down until June 2029.
