Chelsea have reportedly made an ambitious move to sign Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí, with Spanish outlet El Nacional claiming the Premier League club have tabled an offer worth around £68 million for the highly-rated centre-back.
According to the report, Chelsea have identified the Spain international as a priority defensive target as they continue to reshape their squad ahead of the new season. However, Barcelona are said to have immediately rejected the proposal, reiterating that Cubarsí is considered untouchable at the Camp Nou and remains central to the club’s long-term project.
Cubarsí’s stock has risen dramatically over the past two years following his breakthrough at Barcelona. The academy graduate has established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young defenders, earning regular first-team football and becoming a full Spain international.
His performances during the World Cup have only strengthened his reputation, attracting attention from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.
