Hayden Hackney’s move from Middlesbrough to Everton moved one step closer on Wednesday - with the midfielder undergoing his medical.
It’s understood that, after positive talks earlier in the week left the two clubs close to reaching an agreement, a deal has now been struck and Hackney is now on Merseyside putting the finishing touches to his Premier League switch. Boro are set to receive £17m up front from the agreed deal, which, with add-ons, will be worth around £25m in total.
Hackney had dreamed of playing Premier League football for his boyhood club and rejected a move to Ipswich Town last summer to give it one final go.
Now 24 and in the final year of his contract at the Riverside, however, this always felt like the summer Hackney would move on, after Boro’s failure to win promotion last term.
Boro held out for an offer they deemed acceptable, however, having previously rejected three offers from the Toffees - the first of which was just £7m. They were adamant they’d keep the midfielder if their valuation wasn’t met.
While Hackney had interest from other Premier League clubs, Everton were believed to be his preferred destination from the get go. After more positive talks over the weekend, the two clubs were able to progress the deal. Hackney is expected to be announced as a new Everton player within the next week.
Meanwhile, Boro continue to step up their hunt for reinforcements to give Kim Hellberg the best possible chance of challenging at the top of the Championship again.
They have this week been linked with a move for Leicester City midfielder Oliver Skipp, who is well known to Kieran Scott and head of recruitment Chris Jones, who were both involved in orchestrating his successful loan move to Norwich City in 2020-21.
